Richard A. Smith, age 54, is president and chief executive officer of Realogy Corporation. He was appointed CEO in November 2007, in accordance with the Company’s previously announced succession plan. Previously, he served as the vice chairman of the board and president of Realogy Corporation since the company’s spin-off from Cendant in August 2006.
Realogy is a global provider of real estate and relocation services with a diversified business model that includes real estate franchising, brokerage, relocation and title services. The company has approximately 13,000 employees across all of its business units.
In his role as president and CEO, Smith oversees the Realogy Franchise Group, which consists of the Better Homes and Gardens® Real Estate, CENTURY 21®, Coldwell Banker®, Coldwell Banker Commercial®, ERA® and Sotheby's International Realty® real estate brands, which, combined, have approximately 15,000 franchised and company-owned offices and 308,000 brokers and agents worldwide; Cartus, a global leader in corporate and government employee relocation that annually assists more than 130,000 employees in 150 countries for a client base including nearly half of the Fortune 50; NRT LLC, the nation's largest residential real estate brokerage company with approximately 940 offices and 56,000 sales associates in more than 35 of the nation's largest metropolitan markets; and Title Resource Group (TRG), a prominent full-service title and settlement services company.
With reported revenues of approximately $6 billion in 2007, Realogy was recognized as a member of the 2008 FORTUNE 500 for the second consecutive year.
Previously, Smith served as chairman and CEO of Cendant's Real Estate Services Division from 1996 to 2006, and guided the Division's spin-off from Cendant to become Realogy Corporation in August 2006.
During his tenure with Cendant, Smith orchestrated the significant organic growth of the Cendant real estate companies, playing a leading role in the creation of five new companies. Smith was responsible for the consolidation of three of the relocation industry's largest players into a single new entity, Cendant Mobility (now Cartus), within the two-year span of 1997-1998. In late 1997, he was instrumental in the creation of NRT, a joint venture between Cendant and Apollo Management L.P., which was acquired by Cendant in April 2002. In addition, Smith was responsible for Cendant Mortgage from 1998 until January 2005, when the company was spun off to become PHH Corporation.
Smith's experience includes five years as executive vice president of operations for Cendant (then HFS Incorporated). Prior to joining HFS, Smith held several increasingly responsible management positions at Days Inns of America. During his 13 years there, he served as corporate director of risk management, vice president of personnel, senior vice president of human resources, senior vice president of administration and a member of the Days Inn operating committee.
Smith is a member of the Policy Advisory Board for the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University, an honorary member of the Easter Seals National Board of Directors, a member of the Columbus State University Foundation Board of Trustees, and a former member of the New Jersey Economic Growth Council. Smith is also a past recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, presented by the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations (NECO) Foundation, Inc.
Smith earned his Bachelor of Science degree at Columbus State University and received his Master of Science degree from Troy State University.
